Introduction cum History:

Initially I thought it would be easier for me to write the story of Sahasrarjun but when I started writing it I found it very difficult to complete as there was no authenticated information and/or written literature available anywhere including on Internet. Some sites were located by me on Internet contained a similarity in basic story clubbed with many other information which are confusing in nature. I read in some articles written as Sahasrarjun’s father appearing in Sati yug and Sahasrarjuna with his father appearing in Tritha yug against Ravana and in Dwapara against Pashurama. 1 found in the article of Sushmajee referring to Bhavishya Purana articles 3/25,4/15,4/19,4/35; Padam Purana 1/10; Ganesh Purana; Maha Bharata;Vaayu Purana. In no case we can rule out that this information as incorrect but to appreciate her for her in depth study of these Puranas. I send out a message to her through this that She should continue studying these Puranas and if required other related Puranas to trace some concrete and authenticated information on Sahararjuna for the information of all Somavamsha Sahararjuna Kshtriya living all over the world.

I have also found in some articles referring to Sri Chayavan Rishi, Sri Gargamuni, Sri Narad Rishi, Agni Deva, Sri Apava Rishi, Sri Jamadagni Rishi, Vishnu Deva, Dattatreya Deva etc.

We are not clear about Historical facts of our ancestry as there are no carvings, no inscriptions, no imprints on the rocks, no bronze or potteries found at any excavations and no granta written by any of the Rushis. Even the ancient genealogy records that were kept on dried leaflets and barks for generations by genealogists (Bhaats) are either missing or destroyed. A little information what we have today on Sahasrarjuna has been passed on from one generation to another through word of mouth either from Bhaats or from our fore fathers.

Pictorial presentation of Sahararjun was made for the first time by Sri.Vijay Kale of Gadag in 1972 under the sponsorship of Gadag samaj. The original painting, even today, is preserved in Bhavani temple at Gadag. It was subsequently adopted by Sholapur samaj there after by many other SSK Samajes in India and abroad. Now it is 100% accepted by all Somavansh Kshatriyas all over the world as their Lord, the patriarch and leader. For this act of Sri Kaleji, he shall be remembered for ever. I send across my special thanks to him through this.

Story :
Historically, Somavansha Sahasrarjuna was a son of King Kritavirya and Queen Sarama Devi of Haihayan race. He ruled his empire from the capital Mahismati now known as Mahe located on the bank of the Narmada River in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India.

Sonia means Moon. Vamshiya means Lineage. Somavanshiya lineage is said to have lincs with the epic of Mahabharata as Lord Krishna and Pandavas were Somavamshiyas nos To understand more about ourselves Sri Shivaji Maharaj was also a Somavanshiya kshtriya.. This lineage goes to conclude that we belong to the race of Warriors, brave and daring heroes, protectors of our subjects from adharmies and rakshasas and army being Our profession. Hence, our principal principle being the service before self. In the absence of evidence it is not correct to say Sahasrarjuna and Arjuna of pandava borther is one and the same although both appeared in Dwaapara yuga. They had different roles, responsibilities and duties notice in Dwapar yug.

The king, Kritavirya, had sent his son ,Sahasrarjun, to Lord Dattatreya’ s ashram to learn and acquire skills, techniques and strategies of war, the use of armament and various weapons and capture the essence of the Vedas and morals of time to become a suitable Prince. Young Sahasrarjuna’s sincerity, dedication and skills won the heart of Lord Dattatriya. Lord Dattatreya bestowed upon him five blessings to fulfill his desires.

  1. The Lord blessed him the strength of 1000 arms while fighting with enemies in the battle field or 1000 mighty skilled arms each one containing a different weapon. His main weapon being the bow and arrow.
  2. The Lord also blessed him that he dies patriotically on the battle field while fighting in the hands of a person superior in strength than him.
  3. The Lord also blessed him that whenever he wants he can order/ command clouds for rain.
  4. The Lord also blessed him that he guards and protects the weak from adharmies.
  5. That he gets a chariot to go wherever and whenever he wants to go.

The first boon of 1000 arms has made him to be addressed as Sahasrarjun. Sahasra mean 1000.

Sahasrarjuna developed agriculture, irrigation, cultivation of food crops and business. He had expanded the kingdom by leaps and bonds. His popularity and fame spread throufgr huis the universe for the expansion and development of kingdom. He was specially known c) es. attitude to protect his subjects and weak from all types of adharmas/difficulties at all times.

He performed numerous Yagnas being a kshtriya king. His kingdom lasted for more than 1000 years.

Sahasrarjuna married Kasmiri Devi daughter of king Bhadranka of Kasi.

One day Sahasrarjuna, with his sons and soldiers, went to forest for hunting. could find fi the hunting they felt thirsty and hungry. They were searching for food and water. TheY sortie a small hut/hermit nearby. That hermit was of Jamadagni Rushi. They requested for some water and if possible for their King. Rushi, on his own agrees to provide them food therefore told them to refresh and sit under the trees. All of them were provided with a delicious food which they probably did not taste and eat in their lives. The king and his sons secrecy and to know the secret of this miracle. Some of them entered the hermit to know the wanted and to their surprise they found Kamadenu (cow) inside. Kamadenu with her divine power could provide any type of food with any taste. They then expressed their desire to take Kamadenu with them. They said this cow should be with the king to facilitate him to P food to his subjects in the event of famine and on some festivals and special occasions. The proposal was not accepted by the Rushi. The argument and counter arguments went on between them. In the process the Rushi was killed and his wife Renuka sustained injuries. They all went back to their kingdom with Kamadenu.

When Parshurama ,son of Jamadagni rushi, came back to the hermit he was shocked to see his father dead and his mother injured. When he heard the whole story from his mother he had then taken a vow to root out/ finish off the entire kshtriya race from the face of the earth and also to cut all 1000 arms of Sahasrarjuna and then kill him.

Purshurama started butchering kshtriyas wherever he saw them. He killed all Sahasrarjunas sons. He cut 1000 arms of Sahasrarjuna, bestowed on him by Lord Dattatriya, and finally killed him in the battle field while fighting thus fulfilled his own desire.

Additional information to note :

It is also found in the story that Sahasrarjuna was the avatar of Lord Vishnu’s chakra. Chakra deva volunteered to take avatar as Sahasrarjuna to establish harmony on the earth when he heard Narada Muni narrating situations existed then on the earth to Lord Vishnu. It was either 24th or 26th avatar of Chakra deva. While volunteering Chakra deva said that he helped Lord Vishnu in many ways in all his avatars, this particular statement was not liked by The ord. The Lord while agreeing for Ckakra deva’s avatar said decided to remove misconception from his mind.

Parshurama was the avatar of Lord Vishnu himself. BY killing Sashrarjuna in the battle field Lord Vishnu fulfilled his both the objectives.

  1. That the lord had taken the revenge against Sahasrarjuna for killing his father and injuring his mother and getting back Kamadenu in avtar as Parshurama.
  2. Letting Chakra deva know that whatever he had done in all his previous avatars was Only with Lord Vishnu’s grace and dictate so that he cannot claim any credit for it.
